East Chattanooga lies northeast of downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee, on the flat valley floor between the Tennessee River and the ridges that run through the city. On the map, it is a patchwork of small residential grids, each set at a slightly different angle, divided by rail corridors and the long lines of industrial sites.
Chattanooga grew as a railroad city, and this part of town shows it clearly. Tracks and yards cut through the neighbourhoods, and the older blocks grew up around them. To the east, Missionary Ridge rises as a long wooded crest, one of several ridges that give the Chattanooga valley its distinctive striped landscape.
