Ébano lies in the far east of San Luis Potosí, in the Huasteca lowlands near the border with Tamaulipas and Veracruz. The land is flat and warm. The town's map is a regular grid of streets around a central plaza, extending into newer neighbourhoods at its edges, with roads and railway lines leading toward the coast and the port region of Tampico.
The town holds an important place in Mexico's industrial history. Commercial oil production in the country began here in the early twentieth century, when a well named La Pez No. 1 struck oil in 1904. Ébano grew around the fields, pipelines and rail lines that followed, and oil remained a major part of its story.
