Engelskirchen lies in the Oberbergischer Kreis, east of Cologne, in the valley of the Agger. The map is shaped by that valley. The town stretches along the river in a long, narrow band, with the main road and railway following the same corridor. Side streets climb only a little way up the slopes before giving way to woodland.
The river once powered the town's industry. The Ermen & Engels cotton mill, linked to the family of Friedrich Engels, operated here, and the site is now part of the LVR Industrial Museum. Engelskirchen is also known in Germany for its Christmas post office, which answers letters children send to the Christkind each year.
