Esquel lies in the Andean foothills of western Chubut, in a valley enclosed by mountains. From above, the town's regular street grid fills the flat ground of the basin, then stops sharply where the slopes begin. Roads leave the valley through a few gaps, and a stream runs through the settlement, adding a single natural curve to an otherwise ordered layout.
The town is known as the terminus of La Trochita, the narrow-gauge steam railway also called the Old Patagonian Express. Just outside town, the La Hoya ski centre draws winter visitors, and Los Alerces National Park, with its lakes and ancient alerce trees, lies to the west.
