Fountain lies just south of Colorado Springs in El Paso County, along the valley of Fountain Creek as it flows toward the Arkansas River. The creek, the interstate and a rail line all run roughly side by side through town, and on a map they form a strong north–south spine. To the west, the land rises toward the Front Range, with Pikes Peak on the horizon.
Neighbourhoods have spread outward from that corridor in stages. An older, straighter grid sits near the creek, and newer subdivisions with curving streets and cul-de-sacs climb onto the higher ground around it. Fort Carson, one of the Army's larger posts, sits immediately to the west, and many residents have ties to it. Large tracts of open prairie still separate parts of the city, which gives the drawing plenty of breathing room.
The city takes its name from the creek, and the creek is still the clearest line on the page: a winding band of floodplain and trees against the dry plains. Higher ground on either side of the creek holds newer residential areas. They are drawn as looping streets and cul-de-sacs spreading outward from the older core near the water.
