Frankfort Map Poster & Print
Frankfort sits in the north-east of South Africa's Free State, on the Wilge River. It was laid out in the late nineteenth century and named after Frankfurt am Main in Germany. From above, the older town forms a tidy grid of streets near the river, and residential areas extend beyond it across the flat highveld.
The Wilge is the defining natural line on the map. It loops past the town in slow bends and pulls the eye away from the right angles of the streets. Around it the land opens into large farms, and their rectangular fields continue the geometry of the town at a much larger scale. A Frankfort map poster shows both patterns side by side.
Like many Free State towns, Frankfort has a separate township, Namahadi, laid out on its own street pattern some distance from the old centre. On a map the two parts of the settlement read as distinct fabrics, and together they account for most of the town's population. The result is an honest portrait of a highveld town, with its river, its grid and its surrounding farmland.

The older part of Frankfort follows a regular grid of blocks, typical of towns laid out on the South African interior plateau in the nineteenth century.
Highveld fields
Large rectangular farms surround the town and extend its geometry outward, so the edge of the map becomes a patchwork of long, straight boundaries.
