Nigel grew up in the late nineteenth century after gold was found on this eastern edge of the Witwatersrand, and mining shaped the whole town. On a map the old centre is a modest grid of streets. Around it are the flat traces of mine properties, industrial land and residential suburbs that were added as the town grew.
Today Nigel is part of the City of Ekurhuleni, but it still feels separate from the dense urban belt further west. Open veld and farmland fill the gaps between its neighbourhoods and the nearby towns, which makes it look looser from above than much of Gauteng.
The Blesbokspruit, a wetland recognised internationally for its birdlife, runs through the area, and the Marievale bird sanctuary lies along it. A Nigel map poster shows the orderly mining-town streets alongside this long, irregular strip of water.
