La mappa
Freudenstadt Map Poster & Print
Freudenstadt sits on a plateau in the northern Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg. It was founded in 1599 by Duke Frederick I of Württemberg and laid out by the architect Heinrich Schickhardt as a planned town. The design is often compared to a board for the game of nine men's morris, with rows of buildings arranged around a central square.
That square is the defining feature. The Marktplatz is the largest market square in Germany, an enormous open rectangle bordered by arcaded buildings. The town was heavily destroyed at the end of the Second World War and rebuilt largely along its original plan, so the geometry remains intact.
A Freudenstadt map poster shows this unusual layout with great clarity: a huge empty centre surrounded by parallel rows of streets, framed by the forest beyond. Few town plans in Europe are as immediately recognisable from above.

Schickhardt's plan
Streets and building rows follow the Renaissance design of 1599, arranged in parallel lines around the square in a pattern often compared to a nine men's morris board.
Black Forest setting
Dense forest surrounds the town on its plateau, leaving the planned core and later neighbourhoods clearly set apart from the wooded hills around them.
