Olde Towne and rail
The historic centre sits beside the MARC and freight line, with a short, compact street grid that is noticeably older than the suburbs around it.

La mappa
Gaithersburg Map Poster & Print
Gaithersburg lies northwest of Washington, D.C., along Interstate 270 in Montgomery County. On the map it combines several layers: a small historic town that grew up around the railroad, winding postwar suburban streets, and large campuses of research and technology employers along the highway.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology has its headquarters here on a large wooded campus. The city also holds a small International Latitude Observatory, built in 1899 and one of a handful worldwide used to track the wobble of Earth's axis. The Kentlands neighbourhood, designed in the late 1980s, became an influential example of New Urbanism in America.
A Gaithersburg map poster shows these parts side by side. The old town hugs the rail line, Kentlands forms a tight, walkable pattern, and the loops of the suburbs sit alongside the green space of the NIST campus. Together they make a surprisingly varied portrait of a Washington suburb.

Kentlands
This planned neighbourhood of short blocks, small squares and lakes stands out on the map as a denser, more deliberate pattern than the curving cul-de-sacs nearby.
NIST campus
The federal measurement institute's campus forms a large, mostly open area near I-270, surrounded by the city's streets.
