Richmond grew at the fall line of the James River, where rapids stopped ships sailing upstream, and from above the river cuts across the southern part of the city in a broad band dotted with rocky islands. Belle Isle sits in the middle of the rapids, linked to the shore by a footbridge, and bridges cross the river in several places.
North of the river, downtown occupies a grid around the Virginia State Capitol, designed by Thomas Jefferson. To the west, the Fan District spreads out as a distinctive fan-shaped grid of streets, bordered by Monument Avenue, a wide, tree-lined boulevard. Hollywood Cemetery curves along the bluffs above the river.
