La mappa
Newport News Map Poster & Print
Newport News occupies a long, slender piece of the Virginia Peninsula, running roughly northwest to southeast along the James River. At its southern tip, the river opens into Hampton Roads, one of the world's great natural harbours. The city's shape is determined almost entirely by that shoreline.
The southern end holds the older downtown and the vast shipyard that defines the city. North of it, the city continues as a long corridor of neighbourhoods between the river and Interstate 64. The Mariners' Museum park and its lake sit near the water, and Newport News Park fills much of the northern end.
Newport News Shipbuilding builds the US Navy's aircraft carriers and many of its submarines, and it has been at the heart of the city since the late nineteenth century. A Newport News map poster shows a working waterfront city, long and narrow, oriented toward the river.

James River shore
The river runs along the whole western side of the city. It gives the map a long, clean boundary and a strong sense of direction.
Parks to the north
Newport News Park and its reservoirs occupy the northern end. The street pattern thins out there into trails, water and woodland.
