Gansbaai lies on the southern coast of the Western Cape, on the eastern shore of Walker Bay, southeast of Hermanus. Its map is defined by the sea: a rocky coastline running along one side, a small harbour, and residential streets laid out across the gently sloping land behind the shore, with fynbos-covered ground stretching inland.
The town is known internationally for shark cage diving, with boats heading out toward Dyer Island and the channel beside it, waters associated with great white sharks and seals. Just south of town, Danger Point juts into the sea, marked by its lighthouse. Offshore, the troopship HMS Birkenhead sank in 1852, a wreck remembered for the tradition of women and children first.
