Numbered units
The township is organised into units, each with its own street pattern and edges, giving the map a distinctive cellular structure spread across the hillsides.

La mappa
Mdantsane Map Poster & Print
Mdantsane lies roughly twenty kilometres northwest of central East London in the Eastern Cape, within the Buffalo City metropolitan area. It was built from the early 1960s as a planned township, and the map reflects that origin: the settlement is divided into numbered units, each a separate cluster of streets and houses spread across rolling hills and valleys.
It is often described as one of the largest townships in South Africa, and its extent on the map shows why. Neighbourhoods follow ridges and slopes, connected by a few main roads, with streams and open ground between units. The N2 passes along its edge, linking the area with East London toward the coast and Qonce, formerly King William's Town, inland.
Mdantsane has a strong boxing tradition and has produced a number of national and world champions, many of whom trained in local gyms. A Mdantsane map poster shows the township as a whole, with its units, valleys and main roads, drawn with the same care usually given to a city centre.

Hills and streams
Between the units, valleys and watercourses leave open strips of land, and the streets curve with the slopes rather than forming a single uniform grid.
The main roads
A few main roads run through Mdantsane and connect its units, while the N2 along its edge ties the township to East London and Qonce.

Perché Mdantsane
Una mappa che ha un significato
Mdantsane is home to many families whose history in the Eastern Cape runs through the township, and to many others who grew up there and moved away. A map of its units and hills is a way to give that place a permanent spot on the wall.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line are yours to set, so the poster can name a unit, a family or a year. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, and download the $9 HD files or order a printed poster on matte paper.
