La mappa

Gjøvik Map Poster & Print

Gjøvik sits on the western shore of Mjøsa, Norway's largest lake. From above, the town rises from the water in terraces, with its centre gathered near the shore and residential streets climbing the slopes behind. The long, straight edge of the lake gives the map a strong anchor along one side.

The town is known for the Gjøvik Olympic Cavern Hall, a sports arena carved into the rock that hosted ice hockey during the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics. Gjøvik is also a port of call for Skibladner, the historic paddle steamer that still sails Mjøsa in summer. A campus of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is also in the town.

A Gjøvik map poster contrasts the calm expanse of the lake with the dense grain of streets on the hillside. The streams cutting down to the shore and the roads curving around the contours give the composition a clear sense of slope.

01

Mjøsa shoreline

The lake's western shore runs along the town. It forms a clean edge between water and street pattern, and the harbour and waterfront sit right on it.

02

Cavern Hall

The Olympic arena sits inside a hill near the centre. It was built into the rock for the 1994 Winter Olympics and is still used for sport and events.

03

Hillside streets

Residential roads climb and curve with the terrain behind the centre. They create layered, contour-like lines up the slope.
