Gresham lies at the eastern edge of the Portland metropolitan area, where the suburban street grid starts to give way to farmland and the foothills of the Cascades. On a map, broad main roads run in straight lines east–west and north–south. A series of forested buttes, old volcanic hills, interrupts the pattern with curving roads and wooded parks.
The MAX Blue Line light rail ends in Gresham and links it directly to Portland, and the Springwater Corridor trail follows Johnson Creek through the southern part of the city. To the north the land slopes toward the Columbia River. On clear days Mount Hood rises high to the east, one reason many residents value where the city sits.
