Haiger lies in the Lahn-Dill district in the far northwest of Hesse, close to the borders with North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate. The town sits in the valley of the river Dill, and its map follows the valley: a compact centre on the lower ground, with newer districts spreading up side valleys and onto the lower slopes of the surrounding hills.
Three routes share the landscape here: the Dill itself, the railway between Siegen and Giessen, and the A45 motorway, which passes just west of the town on its way between the Ruhr and the Frankfurt area. Their long courses give the map a strong sense of direction, while the old town, with its church at the centre, forms a small, dense knot among them.
Beyond the centre, Haiger includes a number of villages spread across the hills, each with its own small street pattern. Forest covers much of the higher ground between them, so on a wider map the town appears as a scattering of settlements linked by winding roads.
