La mappa
Hanford Map Poster & Print
Hanford sits on the level floor of California's San Joaquin Valley, and the map shows it immediately. Streets run in a steady grid, the edges of town open onto a patchwork of irrigated fields, and long county roads continue out toward the horizon in straight lines. Small canals and ditches cross the farmland around the town.
The city is the seat of Kings County and grew along the railroad in the late nineteenth century. Its downtown still has a courthouse square and China Alley, a historic district tied to the Chinese community that helped build the region.
A Hanford map poster shows a valley town at its clearest. The tighter blocks of downtown sit at the centre, surrounded by residential grids and the large, rectangular parcels of farmland beyond. Almost nothing curves, and that strict geometry works very well in black and white.

Rail line
The railroad that shaped the town runs through it on a diagonal, one of the few lines that breaks the strict grid.
Farmland grid
Outside town, straight county roads mark out large rectangular fields, so the edges of the print look almost ruled.
