Hetauda lies in the inner Terai of Nepal, in a valley enclosed by forested hills. On a map, the city sits in a long, flat basin, with rivers running through and around it and the hills rising steeply on either side. The main roads follow the valley, giving the city a stretched, linear form with neighbourhoods branching off into side valleys.
The city is the capital of Bagmati Province and an important transport hub, lying on routes that connect Kathmandu with the southern plains. It has a long-established industrial district, and factories and warehouses sit alongside residential areas. The forested slopes around the valley frame the town clearly on every side.
