Motijheel lake
The long, narrow lake curves through the town like a river. Its shoreline is the most recognisable shape on the poster and the feature residents find their way by.

La mappa
Mothīhāri Map Poster & Print
Mothīhāri, often written Motihari, is the headquarters of East Champaran district in northern Bihar, on the broad alluvial plain not far from the border with Nepal. From above, the town's most distinctive feature is Motijheel, a long, curving lake that runs through the urban area and is said to have given Motihari its name. Streets and neighbourhoods line both shores.
Champaran holds a special place in Indian history. In 1917, Mahatma Gandhi came here to look into the grievances of indigo farmers, and the Champaran Satyagraha became his first major campaign of civil disobedience in India. Motihari is also the birthplace of the writer George Orwell, born here in 1903 while his father worked in the opium department.
A Mothīhāri map poster places the lake at the centre of the composition, its curving shoreline set against the tighter pattern of lanes and markets. Fields, ponds and villages stretch across the flat plain in every direction, showing how the town sits within the wider Champaran landscape. It is a thoughtful print for the district's families wherever they now live.

Market lanes
The older commercial streets gather close to the lake. They form the densest part of the map, where narrow lanes and small blocks crowd together.
Champaran plain
Beyond the town the land is flat and open, crossed by rural roads, streams and scattered ponds that fill the outer edges of the print.

Perché Mothīhāri
Una mappa che ha un significato
For people from East Champaran, and for readers drawn by the connection with Gandhi or Orwell, a map of Motihari carries real meaning. Edit the title and subtitle, perhaps noting 1917 or a family name, and keep the coordinates line.
Classic black and white suits the lake's crisp outline, and Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand each give a different mood. The $9 download includes six sizes as 300 DPI PNGs and print-ready PDFs, or you can order a matte print with an optional wooden frame.
