Hudiksvall sits on the coast of Hälsingland in Sweden, at the head of a long bay opening to the Gulf of Bothnia. The town was founded in 1582, making it one of the oldest towns in Norrland, and it has long lived from trade, timber and the sea. It is often called Glada Hudik, cheerful Hudik, a nickname dating back to the nineteenth century.
From above, the town's shape is set by water. The harbour bay stretches east toward the Baltic, while the small lake Lillfjärden lies right in the centre, surrounded by streets and paths. Along the waterfront, the old warehouses of Möljen line the quay, and in the quarter known as Fiskarstan, old wooden houses keep an older, irregular street pattern.
