Imatra Map Poster
Imatra lies in South Karelia in eastern Finland, close to the border with Russia. The Vuoksi river flows out of Lake Saimaa, Finland's largest lake, and runs through the town before crossing the border. On the map, Imatra is a chain of districts spread along the river instead of a single centre, with forest and water between them.
The town is best known for Imatrankoski, a set of rapids that attracted visitors as early as the eighteenth century. Today the river is harnessed by a hydroelectric plant, and the rapids are released on a regular schedule in summer as a spectacle. Imatra also has the Church of the Three Crosses, designed by Alvar Aalto.
