Innoshima is an island in the Seto Inland Sea, now part of the city of Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture. From above it is an irregular shape of headlands and small bays, with forested hills in the interior and settlements along the flatter coastal strips. The sea gives the map a clean, strong outline.
The island lies on the Shimanami Kaido, the chain of bridges and roads linking Honshu with Shikoku across the islands. The Innoshima Bridge, a suspension bridge opened in 1983, connects it to Mukaishima, and cyclists crossing the route pass right through. Shipyards along the shore show up as large, angular shapes at the water's edge.
Historically, the island was a base of the Murakami navy, the seafaring clans who controlled these waters, and the hassaku citrus fruit was first found here. An Innoshima map poster shows an island shaped by the sea in every direction, with the roads following its coast.
