Valley-floor centre
The central streets lie in the lowest ground, following the line of the valley. The result is a narrow, stretched town core rather than a square grid.

La mappa
Ipanema Map Poster & Print
This Ipanema is not the beach in Rio de Janeiro but a municipality in eastern Minas Gerais, in the hilly country that drains toward the Rio Doce. On a map the town is compact, and its streets stay close to the valley floors, bending to follow a stream and the base of the slopes.
The land around it is uneven, with rounded hills, farms and pastures. Roads leave town along the valleys and curve through the landscape to neighbouring municipalities. The settlement pattern is shaped far more by the terrain than by any planned grid.
An Ipanema map poster is a portrait of a quiet Minas town. The curving streets in the centre, the winding roads outward and the open land around them make a soft, organic design that differs from the city it shares a name with.

Winding exit roads
Roads leave town and curve around the hills, tracing the relief. On the map they give the composition a gentle, flowing movement.
Farmland on the slopes
Around the town, pasture and farmland cover the hills, crossed by thin tracks. The sparse lines emphasise the density of the town at the centre.
