Islip is a hamlet on the South Shore of Long Island, in the Town of Islip in Suffolk County. On a map, its streets run in long north-south lines down to the Great South Bay, with creeks, canals and marinas cutting into the shoreline. Montauk Highway crosses the hamlet from east to west, and the Long Island Rail Road runs parallel to it a little further north.
The bay dominates the landscape. Its shallow waters, sheltered by the barrier beaches of Fire Island, have long been used for boating and fishing, and the shoreline is lined with inlets and docks. The Town of Islip, which takes its name from the hamlet, is much larger and includes Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma. The hamlet itself keeps a quieter residential character.
