Itu is one of the oldest towns in the interior of São Paulo state, founded in the seventeenth century. From above, the historic centre is a compact grid of narrow streets and small squares, with churches from the colonial and imperial periods marking its corners. Beyond the centre, newer neighbourhoods and gated communities spread out onto the rolling hills.
The town has an important place in Brazilian political history. In 1873 the Itu Convention was held here, one of the founding meetings of the Republican movement, and the building is now the Museu Republicano. Itu is also known across Brazil for exaggerated oversized objects, including a giant phone booth in the main square, a local joke that became a tourist attraction.
An Itu map poster shows the old centre as a tight, regular core. Around it, winding roads follow the hills, and the Tietê River runs past the southeast of the municipality. Highways connecting to São Paulo, Campinas and Sorocaba form the long outer lines. The contrast between the colonial grid and the loose suburban growth makes the composition clear.
