Radiating roads
Main routes leave the centre in several directions, giving the map a star-like structure that points towards the surrounding coffee-growing districts.

La mappa
Jimma Map Poster & Print
Jimma is the largest city in south-western Ethiopia, set in a green, well-watered upland region where coffee has been grown for centuries. From above, the city has a loose, organic shape: a central market district with converging roads, and neighbourhoods that follow the lie of the hills rather than a fixed grid.
Small rivers and streams cut through the town, their valleys showing up as breaks in the street pattern. Main roads radiate outward towards other towns in Oromia, and the campuses of Jimma University occupy large, clearly defined blocks within the city. On the northern side, the old palace of Abba Jifar stands on a hill above the town.
Jimma was the seat of the Kingdom of Jimma in the nineteenth century, and the surrounding province of Kaffa is often linked to the origins of coffee. A Jimma map poster reduces that layered history to its present shape: hills, streams and roads meeting at a market.

University campuses
The grounds of Jimma University appear as large, open blocks with internal paths, a distinct texture compared with the tighter residential streets around them.
Stream valleys
Watercourses divide the neighbourhoods into separate hillside areas, and their curving lines break up the street pattern in a natural, uneven rhythm.
