Kamen-na-Obi stands on the left bank of the Ob River in Altai Krai, in the south of Western Siberia. The name itself refers to its position on the river. From above, the town is laid out in a fairly regular grid of long, straight streets, which ends at the water's edge where the Ob spreads wide with islands and side channels.
The town grew as a river port and trading point for the grain country of the surrounding steppe. A road and rail bridge carries traffic across the Ob here. To the west and south the land is flat and open, divided into large fields, which gives the map a very spacious, even quality away from the river.
