Kandi is the capital of the Alibori department in northern Benin, a region of open savanna that grows drier toward the Niger border. The main north–south road through the country passes the town on its way to Malanville, and from above it forms the strongest line on the map, with Kandi's streets spreading out on either side.
The town serves as an administrative and market centre for the surrounding farmland, where cotton is an important crop. Its map shows a moderately dense core that loosens quickly into scattered compounds, tracks and fields. Seasonal watercourses and low ground add faint lines to an otherwise open landscape.
