Khairpur Mir’s lies on the flat alluvial plain of upper Sindh, east of the Indus and a short drive south of Sukkur. From above, the town is a compact knot of lanes surrounded by a patchwork of fields, orchards and straight irrigation channels that carry river water across otherwise dry land. Roads leave the centre in several directions, thinning quickly into rural tracks.
The town was the seat of the princely state of Khairpur, ruled by the Talpur Mirs, which is where its full name comes from. The state kept its own administration after 1947 and was merged into West Pakistan in 1955. Today the surrounding district is widely known for its date palms, and the harvest shapes the rhythm of the local year.
