Kikuchi is a city in the north of Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, on the plain of the Kikuchi River where it leaves the hills west of the Aso caldera. On a map the built-up area is fairly compact, with streets gathered along the river and the main roads. A patchwork of rice fields and small settlements spreads across the flat land around it.
The town is known for Kikuchi Onsen, a hot spring area close to the centre, and for Kikuchi Gorge upstream. The gorge is a forested valley of clear streams and small waterfalls that draws visitors in summer and autumn. In the medieval period the area was the base of the Kikuchi clan, a powerful warrior family whose name it still carries.
