La mappa
Kimbe Map Poster & Print
Kimbe is the capital of West New Britain Province in Papua New Guinea, on the northern coast of the island of New Britain. It faces Kimbe Bay, a broad inlet of the Bismarck Sea. On the map the town is a modest network of streets along the shore, with a wharf area near the water and residential lanes extending inland.
The land behind the town is dominated by oil palm plantations, which have shaped the local economy since the late twentieth century. From above these appear as large, regular blocks crossed by access roads, a strong contrast with the natural forest and volcanic mountains further inland. Rivers flow from the interior down to the coast.
Kimbe Bay is known for its coral reefs and marine biodiversity, and it attracts divers and researchers from around the world. A Kimbe map poster shows the town at the meeting point of land and sea, with the coastline curving across the sheet and the bay holding a wide, quiet expanse of open water.

Plantation blocks
Oil palm plantations surround the town, laid out in regular blocks with straight access roads. They add a geometric pattern to the inland part of the map.
Coastal town plan
The town's streets run close to the shore, with the wharf and main roads concentrated near the water and quieter residential lanes set further back.
