Kita lies in western Mali, in the Kayes region, on the historic Dakar–Niger railway between Kayes and Bamako. The town grew around the line, and on a map its streets form a loose grid of wide, unpaved roads and large residential compounds. Beyond them is open savanna, broken by the steep sandstone massif that rises just outside the town.
The surrounding area has long been known for groundnut and cotton farming. Kita is also home to a Catholic basilica that draws a national pilgrimage each year, an unusual role for a town in a mostly Muslim country, and the region has deep roots in Malinke musical traditions.
