Kleve is in the far west of Germany, a few kilometres from the Dutch border, on the edge of the flat lower Rhine plain. The town centre sits on a small ridge, which is unusual in this flat landscape, and the streets climb towards the Schwanenburg, the castle that dominates the old town. From above the old streets curve around the hill before opening up into the lowlands.
To the north and west, the Spoy Canal leads through the town towards the Rhine, and old baroque gardens and avenues from the time of Johann Moritz of Nassau-Siegen add long, straight green lines to the map. The Rhine-Waal University campus sits by the water on the edge of the centre.
A Kleve map poster shows the contrast between the compact hill town and the open, water-crossed plain around it. The Schwanenburg is linked to the Lohengrin legend of the swan knight, and Anne of Cleves, the fourth wife of Henry VIII, came from the ducal family that ruled here.
