La mappa
Kronstadt Map Poster & Print
Kronstadt occupies the eastern part of Kotlin Island in the Gulf of Finland, about thirty kilometres west of central Saint Petersburg. Founded by Peter the Great in 1704 to guard the sea approach to his new capital, it was planned as a fortress, and on a map its long, narrow outline and regular street grid still carry that military logic.
The town is cut by canals and docks, including the Obvodny Canal and the dry docks built for the fleet, and harbours line its southern shore. Around the island, small artificial forts rise from the water in chains, and the flood protection barrier crosses the gulf through Kotlin, carrying the ring road that now connects Kronstadt with both shores.
At the centre stands the Naval Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, whose large square and park form the heart of the grid. Kronstadt's historic centre and fortifications are part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for Saint Petersburg. A Kronstadt map poster shows the island city surrounded by water and forts, one of the most distinctive urban shapes in the Baltic.

Docks and canals
Straight canals, dry docks and enclosed harbours cut into the southern edge of the town, giving the map crisp rectangular shapes along the water.
Sea forts
Small artificial forts stand in lines across the gulf, scattered dots and polygons that make the surrounding water as interesting as the town itself.

Perché Kronstadt
Una mappa che ha un significato
Kronstadt means something to naval families, to those who served here and to visitors who have crossed the dam to see the cathedral and forts. Its island shape, cut by canals and ringed by water, makes a striking, graphic print.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with a year of service, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the city's naval history well. HD files are $9, or order a matte print.
