Kuils River lies on the eastern side of metropolitan Cape Town, between the city's northern suburbs and the approaches to Stellenbosch. The town takes its name from the river that runs through it, a modest watercourse that appears on the map as a thin green-edged line winding between residential areas.
From above, the town is a patchwork of suburban layouts. Curving crescents and cul-de-sacs sit beside straighter older streets, and main roads and a railway line cut through to link it with the rest of the metro. Toward the east the density falls away, and the start of the Cape Winelands' open country appears.
