Kettle lake
The lake is almost perfectly round, left by melting glacial ice thousands of years ago. It forms the strong central shape around which the whole map is organised.

La mappa
Lake Ronkonkoma Map Poster & Print
Lake Ronkonkoma is a hamlet in Suffolk County, in the middle of Long Island, built around the lake that gives it its name. From above, the lake is an almost circular body of water. The streets around it mix grids with curving suburban roads that press close to the shore. The Long Island Expressway and the railway run a short way to the south.
The lake is the largest freshwater lake on Long Island. It is a kettle lake, formed when a block of glacial ice melted in place at the end of the last ice age. It has long inspired local legends, including stories of a lake spirit, and in the early twentieth century it was a popular summer resort. Nearby Ronkonkoma station is the eastern end of electrified service on the Main Line.
A Lake Ronkonkoma map poster has a natural focal point: the round lake at the centre, surrounded by fine suburban linework. The composition is simple and balanced and reads at a glance. That makes it a meaningful print for Long Islanders who grew up swimming, fishing or walking along the shore, or commuting from the station nearby.

Lakeside neighbourhoods
Houses and streets crowd the shore on all sides. Small roads run down to the water, and stretches of public shoreline break the residential pattern.
Rail and expressway
The Main Line railway and the Long Island Expressway pass to the south. Their long straight lines contrast with the curve of the lake.
