Leesburg is the county seat of Loudoun County, Virginia, in the rolling country between Washington, D.C. and the Blue Ridge. Its historic core is a compact grid of eighteenth-century streets around the courthouse, with brick buildings and narrow lots. From above, that small, tight centre is surrounded by curving subdivisions, shopping centres and the loops of the Route 15 and Route 7 bypasses.
The Washington & Old Dominion Trail, built on a former railway, runs through town as a thin, continuous line. East of Leesburg the Potomac River bends past Ball's Bluff, the site of an 1861 Civil War battle. To the north is Morven Park, a historic estate. George C. Marshall's home, Dodona Manor, stands near the old centre.
