Lindlar lies in the Oberbergischer Kreis east of Cologne, in the wooded hill country of the Bergisches Land. The map shows a modest centre with its church and main streets, surrounded by dozens of small hamlets connected by winding lanes. Forest and meadow fill the valleys between, so the built-up area appears as a series of islands.
The area is known for Lindlar greywacke, a hard sandstone quarried here for centuries and used in buildings across the region. Lindlar is also home to the LVR Open-Air Museum, which reconstructs rural life in the Rhineland with relocated historic buildings and farmland.
