Longmeadow lies just south of Springfield on the east bank of the Connecticut River. On a map, the town has a clear structure. A broad, low floodplain runs along the river, and Interstate 91 follows the water. The town rises on higher ground to the east, with Longmeadow Street running north to south through its historic centre.
The town green is at the heart of Longmeadow's historic district. It is a long, narrow common lined by colonial-era houses and churches. East of this old spine, streets form a pattern of curving roads and cul-de-sacs typical of twentieth-century American suburbs. They are broken up by parks, golf courses and wooded areas.
