Lordegān lies in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province in western Iran, in the Zagros Mountains. The province has one of the highest average elevations in the country, and the town sits in a valley among steep ridges. On the map the mountains leave little room for sprawl. The streets gather on the valley floor, and roads follow the natural passes in and out.
This is part of the traditional homeland of the Bakhtiari people, whose seasonal migrations between summer and winter pastures are among the best known in Iran. The town serves as a centre for the surrounding villages and pastoral land. From above, the built area stands out as a compact form set against the open, empty shapes of the mountains around it.
