Louis Trichardt, also known as Makhado, lies in Limpopo province at the southern foot of the Soutpansberg mountains. The town takes its name from the Voortrekker leader Louis Tregardt, whose party camped in the area in the 1830s. From above, the neat street grid stops abruptly where the terrain starts to climb, and the mountain range forms a clear natural boundary on the map.
The N1, the main road from Pretoria toward the Zimbabwean border at Beitbridge, runs straight through town, which makes it a natural stop for travellers heading north. Around the central blocks, suburbs and townships spread across the flatter land to the south, with farmland and orchards beyond. To the north, the contours tighten and winding passes take over as the road climbs into the mountains.
