Malabon is on the northern edge of Metro Manila near Manila Bay, on land that barely rises above the sea. On the map, water is everywhere. Rivers and tidal channels wind through the city, fishponds form patterns of rectangles near the coast, and streets squeeze onto the narrow strips of dry land between them.
It has long been a fishing and fish-trading town, and the rhythm of the tides still affects everyday life, especially during flooding. It is also known across the Philippines for pancit Malabon, a thick noodle dish topped with seafood, which is served at many family celebrations.
