Malpe lies on the Arabian Sea coast of Karnataka, a short distance west of Udupi. Its map is defined by water on several sides. A long, straight beach runs along the coast, and a river mouth to the north holds one of the busiest fishing harbours on this part of the coast, with its docks and jetties clearly visible from above.
Offshore, small islands break the open sea. The best known is St. Mary's Island, with its unusual columnar basalt formations, reached by boat from Malpe. On land, the town's streets run between the harbour, the beach and the coconut groves, forming an irregular pattern that follows the coast and the river.
