Maplewood is a first-ring suburb in Ramsey County, Minnesota, wrapping around the north and east sides of Saint Paul. From above it is a patchwork of water and green space. Small lakes and ponds are scattered across the city, wetlands and nature preserves lie between neighbourhoods, and residential streets bend around them instead of following a strict grid.
The city is home to the headquarters of 3M, whose large corporate campus near Interstate 94 appears on the map as a distinct cluster of buildings, roads and parking areas. Interstate 694 and Highway 36 also cross Maplewood. Because the city is long and irregular in outline, its northern and southern neighbourhoods feel quite different from each other.
