Mastic is a hamlet in the Town of Brookhaven on the South Shore of Long Island, close to the eastern end of Great South Bay. The land is flat and low, and the streets follow a simple, regular plan. Long residential roads run in parallel lines, with the waterways and marshes of the shore close by to the south.
The area's history goes back well before the suburban streets. The Floyd family held land here for generations, and William Floyd, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, came from this part of Long Island. The William Floyd Parkway, one of the main roads through the area, is named after him.
