Mayen lies at the eastern edge of the Eifel in Rhineland-Palatinate, west of Koblenz. The old town is still outlined by the course of its medieval walls, and from above it forms a compact oval of narrow streets around the market square. Above it stands the Genovevaburg, a castle that now houses the Eifel Museum, and gates such as the Obertor mark the former entrances.
The town has been known since Roman times for its basalt, quarried here for millstones that were traded widely across Europe. The old quarry field appears on the map as a distinct zone of irregular forms. The Nette winds through Mayen, and newer districts, roads and rail lines spread out across the gently rising volcanic landscape of the Vordereifel.
