Medvezh’yegorsk lies in the Republic of Karelia at the northern end of Lake Onego, one of the largest lakes in Europe. The town sits beside a long bay reaching up from the lake, and from above its streets fill a strip of land between the water and the forested, rocky hills to the north.
The town grew in the early twentieth century with the Murmansk railway and later became closely linked to the White Sea–Baltic Canal, whose southern end is at nearby Povenets. The Sandarmokh memorial forest, a site commemorating victims of Soviet repression, lies not far from town.
