Mersing lies on the east coast of Johor, in peninsular Malaysia, where the Mersing River meets the South China Sea. From above, the town sits on the banks of the river near its mouth, with a compact centre, the jetty area and roads leading along the coast north and south. Beyond the town, the map opens to plantations and forest inland.
The town is best known as the main departure point for ferries to Tioman Island and the other islands of the Seribuat archipelago. Fishing boats still use the river, and the town serves as a stopover for travellers heading offshore. During the northeast monsoon, ferry services reduce and the pace of the town slows.
