La mappa
Montagu Map Poster & Print
Montagu sits at the western end of the Klein Karoo in the Western Cape, in a valley hemmed in by the folded sandstone ridges of the Langeberg range. The town is laid out as a neat grid of streets on the valley floor, with the Kingna and Keisie rivers close by. On almost every side, the mountains rise abruptly beyond the last houses.
Montagu was founded in 1851 and named after John Montagu, then colonial secretary of the Cape. It is known for its restored nineteenth-century houses, its orchards and vineyards, and the hot mineral springs just outside the centre. The main approach from the west runs through Cogmanskloof, a narrow gorge where the road passes through a short tunnel built by Thomas Bain in the 1870s.
A Montagu map poster shows a place defined by its setting. The orderly grid of the town contrasts sharply with the rivers and the steep, folded mountains around it, and the road through the gorge adds a strong, winding line. The composition has both structure and drama, and it suits anyone who loves this part of Route 62.

Cogmanskloof
The road west to Ashton winds through a narrow gorge and a short tunnel. It draws a winding line through the rocky terrain at the edge of the map.
Two rivers
The Kingna and Keisie rivers flow near the town. Their green banks and curving courses soften the geometry of the streets and orchards.
