Muñoz lies in the heart of Nueva Ecija, the broad agricultural plain often called the rice granary of the Philippines. The map is flat and open. A modest town centre sits along the national road, and around it spreads a wide area of paddies divided by irrigation channels and farm tracks. From above the fields form a patchwork of rectangles that outweighs everything around the built-up area.
The city is officially designated a Science City, a title it owes to the institutions within its borders. Central Luzon State University occupies an unusually large campus of lecture halls, experimental farms and ponds, and the Philippine Rice Research Institute has its headquarters here.
